Smart Home Lock

A connected lock offers both security and flexibility, providing you with keyless access to your home that can be controlled via your smartphone or the Internet. Smart home locks are a combination of a mechanical and electronic fastening device that is released by a physical object—such as a key, keycard, keypad, fingerprint, RFID card or security—when secret information like a combination code, password or other coded data is provided.

Design Challenges

As the number of connected smart home applications continues to grow, smart locks provide users with both convenience and security, enabling them to remotely manage access to their homes in a wide range of scenarios.

We offer all the key hardware components required to develop a smart home lock with security standards, which provides exclusive access only to authorized people, and less vulnerable to break-ins.

Recommended Solutions

32-bit Microcontrollers (MCUs)

  • SAM L21 – Ultra-low power family of Arm® Cortex®-M0+ based MCUs that can help extend the battery life of a smart lock design
  • SAM D21 – Low-power and low-cost family of general-purpose Arm Cortex-M0+ based MCUs that  can significantly reduce your system’s cost
  • SAM D51 – High-performance family of Arm Cortex-M4 based MCUs that can quickly execute complex authentication algorithms to provide responsive and speedy unlocking of the door

Secure Element

  • ATECC608B – JIL “high” rated cryptographic co-processor with secure hardware-based key storage

Low Dropout (LDO)/Buck Regulator

  • MIC5232 - This ultra-low quiescent current, low-dropout linear regulator can operate from a single-cell lithium-ion battery and consumes only 1.8 µA of quiescent current while providing 10 mA of output current and low output noise, making it well suited for stand-by or keep-alive applications.

Wireless Connectivity

  • RN4870 or BM70 – This Bluetooth® Low Energy module is designed for easy implementation into a broad range of applications. It delivers up to 2.5 times faster throughput and enables more secure connections than Bluetooth 4.1-based products. It can be used to establish the connectivity between the lock and a smartphone to unlock the door when the phone is in the immediate vicinity. The module’s low-power Bluetooth radio enables power-efficient wireless communication for longer battery life. A complete Bluetooth software stack is integrated in the device, and a shielded regulatory-certified version with built-in antenna is also available.

Boost Regulator

  • MIC2253 – High-current 1 MHz high-efficiency boost regulator output Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and  externally programmable soft-start

Motor Driver

  • MIC4606 - Dual full-bridge motor driver that offers a wide operating voltage range to drive bipolar stepper motors or provide bidirectional control of two DC motors
