5G/LTE Mobile Networks

5G/LTE: Designing and Deploying Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) Infrastructure

Growing demand for consumer mobile bandwidth, increasing connectivity for IoT and sensor devices for smart city applications and emerging applications like Augmented Reality (AR) and self-driving cars are taxing the limits of what today’s LTE networks can deliver. As a result, industry leaders like the 5G Infrastructure Public-Private Partnership (5G-PPP) have joined forces to drive upgrades of mobile networks globally. The ability to broadly enable various industries’ use of 5G mobile networks to enhance productivity and simplify operations through high-bandwidth connectivity is essential to this initiative.

On network infrastructures, 5G requires new technologies and solutions to deliver high-capacity performance and functions at a fraction of the cost (on a per bit basis), driving new solutions from equipment manufacturers to meet these new requirements.

To deliver high bandwidth and low latency, 5G utilizes a diverse spectrum of LTE frequencies. On the lower end, 5G will use classic LTE frequencies at less than 2.5 GHz. 5G can stretch this to 3.5 GHz, and in some cases, all the way to 6 GHz. On the higher end, many carriers are planning to implement 5G connectivity at classic microwave (28 GHz and 32 GHz) and millimeter waves (mmWaves) in V and E bands up to 71 GHz.

5G Radio Access Network (RAN) is expected to take advantage of multiple form factors like macro cell and small cells to drive the HetNet concept that started during the LTE deployment cycle. Beyond wireless, 5G mobile networks will also drive upgrades of wired access, backhaul and core networks of most of the telecom carriers around the world.

30–50% Lower Power Than Competing Mid-Range FPGAs

These FPGAs are well suited for thermal and space-constrained applications such as small cells and outdoor equipment.

Small Form Factor Packages Starting at 11 × 11 mm for 100K LEs

These FPGAs are well suited for high-density multiport boards.

Best-In-Class Security and Reliability

Protect against tampering and hacking.

Integrated Hard IP

Take advantage of these FPGAs for DDR controllers, PCIe®, crypto and LVDS gearing with CDR.

Built-In MACC Blocks for Signal Processing

Hardened pre-adders are well suited for baseband processing and low- to mid-bandwidth DFE at 4 × 4 × 60 MHz.

Ultra-Low-Power 12.5G Transceivers

These FPGAs are well suited for 10G Ethernet and CPRI fronthaul applications.

5G/LTE Applications

Small Cells

With the advent of 5G, small cells are expected to play much bigger role in a wireless network. Their smaller form factor and limited footprint make small cells well suited for high-bandwidth concentrated services, especially those that use higher frequency ranges such as microwave and millimeter waves.

We offer the following solutions for small cells:

  • JESD204B/C IP
  • DUC/DDC to create filters in design tools
  • CPRI IP
  • 10G Ethernet MAC IP

Microwave/Millimeter Wave Backhaul

One of the promising new applications for microwave and millimeter waves is in mobile access, such as a small cell with electronically steered beams for last-mile connectivity.

We offer the following microwave/millimeter wave backhaul solutions:

  • I/O expansion
  • Data security
  • Data modems

5G Base Stations—Distributed Unit (DU)

In a 5G network, the DU performs the classic modem functionality of a base station. A DU is typically deployed out in the field, although it may or may not be placed at the bottom of a cell tower.

We offer the following DU solutions:

  • RoE mappers
  • I/O expansion/aggregation
  • 1588 IP

5G/LTE Radios

Radio equipment, including Remote Radio Units (RRUs) and Remote Radio Heads (RRHs), is fundamental in wireless infrastructure.

We offer the following 5G/LTE radio solutions:

  • JESD204B/C IP
  • DUC/DDC to create filters in design tools
  • CPRI IP
  • 10G Ethernet MAC IP
