Low Power | Segment LCD | USB | Secure IoT | Safety | Sensor Interfacing

The PIC24FJ ‘GA’ family of microcontrollers (MCUs) enables extremely cost-effective designs for Internet of Things (IoT) sensor nodes, portable medical devices and industrial control applications. In addition to eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology, these devices feature integrated crypto modules, segmented LCD drivers, 12-bit Analog-to Digital Converters (ADCs), cryptographic engine, dual-partition Flash panels, 10-bit Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) and much more.

This family comes packed with Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs), such as Configurable Logic Cell (CLC), Multi-Output Capture Compare Pulse Width Modulation (MCCP) module and Direct Memory Access (DMA), which allow you to accomplish tasks in hardware while freeing up the Central Processing Unit (CPU) to perform other tasks or go to sleep.

Target Applications

  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Consumer devices
  • Industrial automation
  • Battery-powered devices
  • Handheld devices
  • Home appliances
  • HVAC control
  • Electricity metering
  • Security panels
  • Touch controllers
  • Fingerprint scanners
  • Embedded security

Key Features of the PIC24F ‘GA’ Family

Key Feature Description
Low Power Features eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology with sleep currents as low as 30 nA, flexible wake-up sources and run currents down to 150 μA/MHz to create power-efficient applications
Segment LCD Integrated display controller with up to 512 segments and able to operate in sleep mode
Flexible Peripherals Wide range of basic and specialized peripherals including Crypto Engine, CLC, Real-Time Clock/Calendar (RTCC) and Pulse-Width Modulators (PWMs) designed to take the load off the CPU and reduce power consumption
Dual Partition Flash with Live Update Capable of storing two independent software applications, including bootloader, to enable programming of one partition while executing application code from the other and allow run-time switching between active partitions
Direct Memory Access (DMA) Dedicated DMA controller supporting both memory and peripheral data transfers to reduce CPU workload
Scalable Flash memory densities range from 16 KB to 1024 KB and RAM ranging from 4–32 KB with packages ranging from 28- to 121-pin options

Easily Implement VBAT Low-Power Operation

Do you need to conserve energy and implement a secondary power source to keep the state machine or RTCC value intact in your application? Find out how you can leverage the PIC24F family’s core-independent features to emulate VBAT functionality with minimal core intervention using a just few external components.
