Overview

The LX7720-DB Daughter Board is a hardware platform intended to speed up the development process for the LX7720 radiation-hardened by design motor driver for spacecraft actuation and control systems.

The LX7720-DB Daughter Board contains a soldered in place ceramic-packaged LX7720-ES and peripherals to allow LX7720 functionality to be quickly evaluated with permanent magnet synchronous motors and stepper motors. Demonstration firmware is available for radiation hardened RTG4 FPGAs and Microchip's family of high-reliability 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M7 microcontrollers for space.

The architecture provides two easy methods for interfacing the LX7720-DB to a controller:

The following are key features of the LX7720-DB Daughter Board:

  • Supports direct connection to FPGA evaluation boards with an FMC-HPC connector such as RTG4 FPGA DEV-KIT, RT PolarFire FPGA RTPF-DEV-KIT, PolarFire FPGA MPF300-EVAL-KIT, and SmartFusion2 SoC FPGA M2S150-ADV-DEV-KIT
  • A 2x20 0.1" pin header provides alternative access to signals for connection to non-FPGA control systems
  • Linker boards are included to connect to the SAMRH71F20-EK evaluation kit and SAMRH71-TFBGA-EK evaluation kit for the radiation hardened SAMRH71F20 MCU, and the SAMRH707F18-EK evaluation kit for the radiation hardened SAMRH707F18 MCU
  • Includes the eight NFETs and output current sensing for the full four half-bridges supported by the LX7720, allowing direct connection to typically 3-phase PMSM and BLDC motors, or 2-phase bipolar stepper motors
  • Motor supply can be from the included 24V DC adapter or an external 0V to 60V supply
  • On-board regulators generate the 15V VGS gate drive supply and 5V VCC analog supply for the LX7720
  • An on-board regulator provides a 3.3V VDD logic supply for typical applications. A different logic supply can be provided from either the FPGA FMC-HPC connector, the 2x20 0.1" pin header, or a 2-pin header if desired
  • The LX7720's MOD_CLK clock can be provided by an on-board 27MHz oscillator module, the FPGA FMC-HPC connector, the 2x20 0.1" pin header, or via an SMA connector
  • The LX7720's CP_CLK clock is provided externally through the FPGA FMC-HPC connector, the 2x20 0.1" pin header, or via an SMA connector
  • A 0.1" pin header provides access to the LX7720's six BLI bi-level comparator inputs. The corresponding six BLO comparator outputs are routed to both the FPGA FMC-HPC connector and the 2x20 0.1" pin header
  • The LX7720's resolver/LVDT interface is configured targetting applications using a square drive waveform as used by the available RTG4 demo firmware for driving a BLDC with resolver position feedback
