Description
In a network consisting of routers, switches, and hosts, the multicast functionality allows routers to forward multicast packets on all ports in case any host on that segment needs them. In the most simple implementation, a host does not need to indicate to the network that certain multicast packets are wanted. Multicast packets are always forwarded to the segment in case any host on the segment needs them. This design is not ideal because packets that are not used or needed still take up bandwidth. To solve this, the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) protocol has been designed. The IGMP protocol makes it possible for hosts to actively request multicast packets with a given multicast address. When the router sees such request on one of its ports, it knows that there is an actual need for a given multicast packet, and it must therefore start to forward the packet to the requesting port.
