Single-Shunt Three-Phase Current Reconstruction Algorithm for Sensorless FOC of a PMSM

A large number of motor control applications are consistently and continuously looking for methods to improve efficiency. In order to achieve that, the most commonly used control scheme is Field-Oriented Control (FOC) which typically relies on 3 or 2 current shunts for phase current sensing. To achieve a lower system cost, a 1 (single) shunt can also be used. The application note presented here uses the peripherals of the dsPIC Digital Signal Controller (DSC) and performs three-phase current reconstruction to measure the phase currents of the motor using a single shunt.
