High-Power PoE Powering a Whole New Generation of Smart, Connected Devices

Microchip is an innovator and thought leader in PoE technology, as well as a major contributor to the IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt standards.

The next-gen technology offering advanced mobile internet connectivity with faster speeds unfolds a plethora of 5G, IoT and enterprise and industrial automation applications. These applications reflect exceptional demand for connecting a large number of devices to Ethernet networks – like IP surveillance cameras, 802.11ac and 802.11ax access points, LED luminaires, 5G small cells and other IoT appliances.

However, the fundamental challenge is to be able to reliably and efficiently power the significant number of devices being installed.

The Solution

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) technology offers numerous advantages for powering these devices and the latest IEEE® 802.3bt standard makes this possible by pushing the power limit of Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Powered Devices (PDs) to 90W.

The new IEEE 802.3bt standard increases the maximum PoE power available mainly by utilizing all four pairs of the structured wiring. IEEE 802.3bt enhances the power classification information exchanged during initial negotiation to allow optimized power management capability. These enhancements solve the challenge of higher power and more efficient energy PoE systems.

Microchip Offerings

Microchip is an innovator and thought leader in PoE technology, as well as a major contributor to the IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt standards. Microchip’s high-power PoE (30W / 60W / 90W) single and multi-port midspans and switches are ideal for indoor, outdoor and industrial environment installations including one or multiple IP-based applications. Microchip also offers indoor to outdoor 30W and 60W single port solutions with inbuilt surge protection. Users can power any combination of pre-standard and IEEE 802.3bt-2018-compliant PDs by installing Microchip’s IEEE 802.3bt-compliant solutions.
