How Does 2D Capacitive Touch Technology Work?
- Projected capacitive touch sensors operate by measuring the tiny change in capacitance on an electrode when a human finger or other object comes in contact with a sensor grid underneath the touch surface
- An on-chip touch peripheral is used to take separate measurements of the capacitance on all electrodes to determine the position of the finger
- Additional on-chip processing functions are used to detect surface gestures like swipes and report them to the application software

Microchip QT8 Xplained Pro kit is an extension board that enables easy evaluation of the 2D Touch Surface library.
The DM080101 Water Tolerant Touch Surface development kit enables easy evaluation of the 2D Touch Surface library running on a ATtiny1617.
The DM164149 Water Tolerant 2D Touch Surface development kit - PIC MCU Edition enables easy evaluation of the 2D Touch Surface library.
The product is a development platform that will use an Arm® Cortex®-M4 SAM E51 MCU driving both the graphics and touch processing functions to a display module that has a touch sensor overlay, but no dedicated touch controller.
This design showcases a low-cost, integrated touch and graphics solution that will differentiate it from the currently available solutions in the market:
