Device Overview

Summary

Description

The OS85656 is a streaming Input/Output Companion IC that provides MediaLB® port expansion. It allows a wide variety of I/O types to be conveniently interfaced to a MOST® network. All MOST data types are supported (control, asynchronous, synchronous and isochronous). The primary function of the OS85656 is to route data streams simultaneously between industry standard application I/O interfaces, including MediaLB® (3-Pin), TSI, SPI, I²C and I²S. A powerful routing engine allows simultaneous routing of data between the MediaLB 3-Pin interface and the various serial I/O ports available on the chip including:

  • Serial Audio I/O (I2S and sequential (TDM) modes)
  • Serial TSI
  • SPI
  • I²C

The high-performance routing engine operates at an internal speed of up to 1.5 Gbits/s. It is able to simultaneously route a variety of data types between applications hardware located on the PCB or between those applications and the MOST network. For example, a combination of TCP/IP data packets, MPEG transport stream packets and multiple audio channels required for 7.1 surround sound applications can be routed between ports.

The I/O Companion can interface with any of SMSC's Intelligent Network Interface Controller (INIC) devices via the MediaLB 3-Pin interface.

Applications

The I/O Companion serves as a generic I/O port expander for various audio and video applications including:

  • Head units
  • Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE)
  • Amplifiers
  • TV and radio tuners
  • Video displays
