Key Features

The Profinet IO Demo is a complete, ready-to-use demonstration application that showcases an industrial PROFINET IO automation system built on Microchip MPU platforms. Running the MPLAB® Harmony v3 bare-metal software framework on SAM9x60 and SAMA7D65 Curiosity Kits, the demo connects three distributed PROFINET IO devices — a temperature-sensing node, a BLDC motor-control node, and a graphical HMI node — to a PC-based CODESYS PROFINET controller over standard Industrial Ethernet.

Get the Demo
The complete package — PROFINET stack library, demos (including the one documented on this page), examples, and documentation — is available for download on Microchip Direct: Download the Profinet IO Demo (SW44H19A) on Microchip Direct
This is your starting point for obtaining everything needed to run the demonstration.

The system demonstrates a real-world closed-loop control scenario: temperature data acquired from a sensor node governs the operation of a BLDC motor, while an intuitive touch HMI enables real-time configuration, monitoring, and control. This modular, multi-node architecture illustrates a scalable approach to building PROFINET-enabled industrial products.

Getting Started
Once you've downloaded the package, the PROFINET Quick Start Guide (Harmony v3) walks you step-by-step through setting up the host environment, connecting the PROFINET IO devices to the CODESYS controller, and running the closed-loop demonstration — getting you from download to a working system quickly.

By delivering pre-validated software, hardware, and documentation, the Profinet IO Demo accelerates time-to-market and eliminates the cost and risk of in-house PROFINET stack development — providing customers with a proven foundation for developing standards-compliant Industrial Ethernet, motor control, and HMI applications.

  • PROFINET IO over Industrial Ethernet — Standards-compliant implementation interoperating with a PC-based CODESYS PROFINET controller (PLC).
  • Multi-node distributed architecture — Three independent PROFINET IO devices: temperature-sensing node, motor-control node, and HMI node.
  • Microchip MPU platforms — Built on SAM9x60 (EV40E67A) and SAMA7D65 (EV63J76A) Curiosity Kits.
  • MPLAB® Harmony v3 bare-metal framework — Efficient embedded software without full-OS overhead.
  • Production-ready PROFINET stack library — The core component of the package, providing a pre-validated, standards-compliant stack — available with demos, examples, and documentation on Microchip Direct (SW44H19A).
  • BLDC motor control — Drives a brushless DC motor via the Brushless 18 Click board.
  • Temperature sensing — Real-time temperature acquisition using the Thermo 8 Click board.
  • Graphical touch HMI — SAMA7D65-based interface on a 10" LVDS display for configuration, monitoring, and control.
  • Closed-loop control — Temperature threshold automatically governs motor operation, with parameters adjustable in real time.
  • SD-card bootable binaries — Pre-built images for each node enable quick setup and deployment.
  • Complete documentation — Includes demo application software, a step-by-step User Guide, and the PROFINET Quick Start Guide (Harmony v3) for fast bring-up.

To get started today, download the demo package on Microchip Direct (SW44H19A).
