Digital Control Scheme

The bi-directional control system of EPC9151 is based on the conventional Average Current Mode Control (ACMC). An outer voltage loop regulates the output voltage by comparing the most recent feedback value against an internal reference. The deviation is processed by a discrete type II (2P2Z) compensation filter. The output of the voltage loop sets the reference for the two inner current loops. Each phase current controller processes the deviation between the given dynamic current reference and the individual most recent current feedback. Each current control loop output adjusts the individual duty cycle or phase resulting in tightly balanced phase currents. This control scheme is applied to both, 48 V to 12 V downstream buck as well as to 12 V to 48 V upstream boost operation.

When powered from a single DC source from either side of the converter, the output voltage will be kept constant up to the maximum output current of 25 A buck respectively. 5.5 A in boost operation, at which stage the converter switches into the constant current mode, effectively disables the voltage regulation.

This firmware serves as the fundamental building block of battery charger front-end systems by implementing a chemistry-specific charging profile or as balancing converter between two battery powered bus rails.

The EPC9151 kit includes:
• One EPC9151 300 W 1/16th brick power module
• One EPC9531 test fixture board

For evaluation purposes, the 1/16th brick power module is mounted on the EPC9531 test fixture, including the recommended 47µF of input capacitance (48 V side) and 220 µF of output capacitance (12V side) which offers easy access to voltage sense test points as well as power and data connectors. Microchip’s dsPIC33CK DSC can be programmed using the in-circuit serial programming port (ICSP) available on the RJ-11 programming interface as well as the 5-pin header provided by the EPC9531 test fixture. These interfaces support all of Microchip’s in-circuit programmers/debuggers, such as MPLAB® ICD4, MPLAB® REAL ICE or MPLAB® PICkit4 and other previous derivatives.

(EPC), features the dsPIC33CK32MP102 Digital Signal Controller (DSC) which is ideal for Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) applications as the main controller implementing interleaved, non-isolated synchronous buck converter power module. The power stage features the 12.5 A ePower™ Stage device EPC2152, a monolithic eGaN® FET half bridge power stage with integrated eGaN® FET drivers.

Embedding the driver circuit and the power FETs into the same monolithic die minimizes the common source inductance (CSI) between the high- and low-side FETs as well as the gate drive loop inductance. By matching the drivers to the power FETs results in extreme switching speeds of 48 V / 1 ns and minimum switching losses. The 3.3V compatible input levels allow directly driving the power stage from a dsPIC33 DSC’s pin without requiring additional components with maximum edge placement precision.
