The SPI bus is very popular for serial EEPROM applications requiring fast speeds and robust designs in noisy environments. This seminar covers seven usage recommendations for SPI serial EEPROMs. The seminar begins by listing some of the advantages of the bus, including its wide density range and its several write protect options. Four hardware recommendations are given as ways to protect data and to save microcontroller connections. The seminar then moves on to the status register, beginning with details on how the write enable latch can prevent unwanted writes. Finally, the status register?s software and hardware write protect options are discussed.

Before joining Microchip, he worked in business development at Intel Corporation where he marketed embedded control products. Barry has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.B.A. from Arizona State University.
