SMPS Buck Converter Design Example

Abstract

This course covers a design example of a simple Buck DC-DC converter. In this example we will calculate the required inductor and output capacitor specifications. We will then determine the input capacitor, diode, and MOSFET characteristics. With the selected components, we will calculate the system efficiency and then compare an asynchronous buck converter to a synchronous buck converter.

Bill Hutchings is a Product Marketing Manager with Microchip Technology's Digital Signal Controller Division (DSCD). He has over nineteen years of experience in the embedded systems and semiconductor industries, and has previously worked with Freescale Semiconductor as a Systems and Applications Engineer responsible for new product development and marketing. Bill also worked at Motorola in design and systems engineering, as well as project leadership. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from San Diego State University, and a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University. Bill is a patent holder and is based in Microchip's Chandler, Arizona offices.
