Microchip Samples - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I use my free or personal email address to order IC samples?
Microchip provides samples of our products to design engineers to assist them in product designs. We also like to support education of our upcoming engineers and therefore we allow students and educators to order samples for their educational curricula. The email domain name should be a corporate (.com / co.uk for example) or educational (.edu or .ac), however we reserve the right in each case to withdraw support to any individual. If your valid university domain is unable to order samples please contact us at help.buy@microchip.com.
2. I am a Design Consultant and have no company name or specific company email address, how do I order free IC samples?
If you are an independent contractor with no company specific email address and want to order samples, please contact us at help.buy@microchip.com and one of our team will be able to assist with your needs.
3. What products are available for sampling?
Microchip offers samples of many products that are active and in production. In addition, it is often possible to obtain samples of new products scheduled to be released in the very near future. For most devices, many different temperature and voltage options are available.  If a specific package or temperature option is not available for sampling there is often an equivalent part that can be used for sampling purposes. If you do not see the specific device or package you need, you may buy it online at www.microchipdirect.com, through one of our distributors, or contact us for other options.
4. How does the sample request process work?
Links to available samples appear on the web page that displays pricing, datasheets and other documentation for a specific device. Samples you request are automatically placed in a "samples cart". Once you check out, a request for your samples order goes to our fulfillment center. You will receive e-mails updating you on the status of your order. You may also check your order status by logging in and clicking on the "Order History" link.

Orders in some countries may be evaluated and fulfilled by Microchip distributors in that country. If this is the case with your order, you will be notified at checkout. Subsequent communication regarding your order would then be with the distributor.
5. How much do the samples cost?
The online samples are provided as a service. A nominal processing fee may apply to each sample order placed. This fee is payable in U.S. dollars and is due at the time of purchase. Any taxes, duties, and other government assessments are your responsibility.  These additional landed costs rarely apply to sample orders.
6. Are there limits on how many samples I can obtain?
Yes. In order to provide samples to our customers, it is necessary to limit the number of requests. Each sample order is limited on the quantity, the number of unique items, and the orders allowed per month. The number of orders that you can place is communicated to you when you login.  If you have reached your limit for the month, you will be informed when you may place your next order.
7. Some of the devices I need are out of stock. How will this affect my order?
Ordering an "out of stock" device will delay shipment of the entire order until the device becomes available.
8. What should I do if I need more than 3 units?
If you need a larger sample size you may buy it online at www.microchipdirect.com  or through one of our distributors
9. Why was my sample order refused?
Microchip reserves the right to evaluate all sample requests prior to fulfillment. Please contact your regional sales office for further clarification. Please note that the online sample site no longer accepts orders from generic ISP accounts such as Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail.

Reminder for customers in South Africa: Please be sure to provide a postal address for your orders (PO Box). Street deliveries cannot be made.

11. Will the Microchip site work if I have cookies turned off?
No. Cookies are a way for the site to maintain information by passing data back to your browser. The next time you visit the site your browser will automatically pass the data back. This way, you do not have to re-enter the items in your samples cart or remember your username and password.
12. Why do I have to activate my account?
To ensure that you (and only you) receive important correspondence from us regarding your orders, it is important that we verify your e-mail address. This is a one-time only verification process and has been implemented to protect the privacy of our customers.
13. I forgot my password. Now what?
If you forget your password, you can still gain access by clicking on the "Log In" link and then clicking on the "Forgot Your Password?" link. Once you enter your e-mail address, a new password will be generated and sent to you via e-mail instantly. Once you receive this password, log in to the site and change the password to your desired password.
14. Who should I contact if I have a problem or question?
For questions or technical support just e-mail us at OnlineSampleOrderSupport@microchip.com or you can contact your local sales office.  To determine the local sales office information, visit the Contact Us page.
15. How do I ship samples to multiple addresses?
Microchip lets you add multiple addresses to your profile. You can do this in one of two ways:
- Login and click on the "Edit Address" link
- When checking out, click on the "Add New Address" link, add a new address record, and then use this newly created address with your order.
16. How long will it take to get my samples?
Typically, shipments take 2-3 weeks to arrive at their destination from the time the shipment(s) are picked up from our warehouse; however, unforeseen shipping delays may occur. You can always check the status of your order by clicking on the "Order History" link once you have logged in.

Please note that orders to Europe are now delivered through UK Parcel Post. You can see when the order ships by clicking on the "Order History" link, but the tracking numbers will not be present. Currently, there is no way to track packages with UK Parcel Post.

Your sample order may be forwarded first to a Microchip sales office, and then to your final address. Sample orders normally take 2-3 weeks for delivery. If you need faster delivery, please visit www.microchipdirect.com or one of our distributors.
17. What is the method of shipment?
Sample orders are generally delivered via FedEx, however, sample orders to many countries including Australia, Canada, China, Europe/EMEA, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa, and Taiwan are first imported to a central office in the region to consolidate freight and import tariff's. From that point, we arrange local, in country delivery using local carriers. While it does add a few days lead time to the orders, this usually helps maintain costs. You can see when the order ships by clicking on the "Order History" link. However, for countries where sample orders are consolidated, the tracking number is for the shipment to the central Microchip office and not the final destination.

Please note that orders to Europe are now delivered through UK Parcel Post. You can see when the order ships by clicking on the "Order History" link, but the tracking numbers will not be present. Currently, there is no way to track packages with UK Parcel Post.
