MAC address for new batch of ENC424J600 always reads 0

Hi, I am busy debugging an issue we are having with a batch of our boards. The MAC(read from the ENC424J600 chip) address for all boards in this batch is 0. If I change the ENC424J600 chip it works as expected, and I get the unique factory programmed MAC address. I am starting to fear I might have a bad batch of ENC424J600 chips. We did not buy direct from Microchip. I have tried reading the 3 MAC address registers(MAADR1 to MAADR3) at different times during initialization, but always get 0. I am hoping it might be some hardware issue that was borderline, and worked with old chips, but not new ones. We use PSP Mode 5 to read/write from/to the ENC424J600.
The new chips have the following marking on them "1424KYD" or "1424KYO".
The old chips have the following marking on them "1021YUY".

Has anyone had trouble reading the MAC address from the ENC424J600? Or, is there any alternative method I can try using?

Check with the Distributor you bought them from.

Hi, yet I just wrote to them. Hoping someone else has had a similar issue, and it is something that can be fixed in software.

I have a similar problem. I have a project that uses PIC32 and ENC424J600. Last month I had to replenish my stocks, and all the ENC424 units received had this problem! As I do not have access to the PIC source code, only compiled HEX, I can not solve it via software. I opened a ticket at Microchip support on November 27th, and until today (13 DAYS !!) no response! My work is stopped and my clients are asking for a solution. I will not buy new components because we do not know which batches are good, and Microchip has a habit of distributing defective items and not solving problems... Did you solve your problem?

You need to call them. You can call 24 business hours after the ticket is placed.
Do you have your lot numbers? And are you sure the parts were bought through microchip distribution and are not counterfeit.
