PIC32MZ EF starter kit "The target device is not ready for debugging"

I'm trying to get started with a DM320007 "PIC32MZ Embedded Connectivity with FPU (EF) Starter Kit".

I have all the latest tools installed and am trying to build a Harmony app. I've modified system_init.c as follows:

#pragma config FPLLIDIV = DIV_3
#pragma config FPLLRNG = RANGE_5_10_MHZ
#pragma config FPLLICLK = PLL_POSC
#pragma config FPLLMULT = MUL_50
#pragma config FPLLODIV = DIV_2
#pragma config UPLLFSEL = FREQ_24MHZ

with the intention of setting up a 200MHz system clock.

With, and without, these changes, after building I get

Programming...
Programming/Verify complete
The target device is not ready for debugging. Please check your configuration bit settings and program the device before proceeding.

Can anybody advise the correct config bits to get this board to work? I'm using the on-board debugger, and have the jumpers set appropriately.

I resolved this myself by creating a new project using MHC and copying over the config bits.

The final gotcha was that my starter board has a 24MHz oscillator module, not a 24MHz crystal, so one has to select

POSCMOD = EC

or the primary oscillator fails to work, and you're stuck in fast RC mode.

Hi,
Can you confirm you use :
MPLAB X > v3.1x
XC32 v1.40
Which OS do you use ?
Do you have also MPLAB v8.xx installed on your PC ?
Regards

Hi,

I'm using the PIC32MZ2048EFM144 and got the same message when I tried to debug my code, using the embedded USB Debug port.

The following setting solved this issue:
#pragma config ICESEL =     ICS_PGx2

@battyus     Thank you for posting this.  I had the same issue, with this board trying to use a ICD4.  Once I changed the #pragma as you suggest, it fixed my problem.
