PICKIT3s not detected on MPLAB X 3.10 / OSX El Capitan

Hi there!

I was working away on OSX Yosemite with no problems.  Updated to El Capitan over lunch, and then my PICKIT3 stopped connecting.

I've tried:-

- Different pickit3s... tried 3
- Rebooting, soft and hard
- Uninstalled/ Reinstalled MPLABX 3.10
- Installed JRE 8 manually (had to do to get mplab x working)
- Tried a different hub. Tried directly connecting to the macbook pro's usb sockets.
- I ran the IPE, it doesn't seem to see the pickit3 either.

Anything I'm missing?

Same problem.

Immediately after update pickit 3 not found.

This is a catastrophe.

The System Profiler in El Capitan can see it fine:

I'm having the same issue with my ICD3--it shows up in the system profiler but no amount of reinstalling MPlabX or Java versions seems to fix it. Neither the IDE nor IPE works, they don't see anything connected at all.

Have posted a Critical support ticket with microchip: suggest others do the same. Weekend is coming.

There have been problems in the past with OS X upgrades removing the sym links that MPLAB X depends on.  Normally uninstalling/Installing MPLAB X will solve this, but sometimes it will not.

Please try:
  1. Uninstall MPLAB X
  2. Rename or remove the /Applications/Microchip/mplabcomm directory
  3. Install MPLAB X

Right, terrible timing for me too.

My own USB devices are talking to my proprietary firmware updating apps perfectly fine.  What's going on with MPLAB?

Just tried that...

No change!

Anyone running MPLAB+PICKIT3 on El Capitan with no problems?

Bryan H - have followed the deletion and re-installationn process as suggested.

Installation appeared to go OK but then quit at the end with the message: "Problem running post install step. Installation may not complete correctly. Error running /Applications/microchip/MPLABX/v3.10/MPLABCOMM-v3.10-osx-installer.app/Contents/MacOS/osx-intel: child process exited abnormally"

Found the following in Console. So as not to confuse the situation with my own initiatives, will await instructions.

Having the same issue, but with the RealICE. Have re-installed a few times, deleted everything, still no luck. Get this message when MPLAB X starts:
info: The project uses platform tool RealICEPlatformTool but that tool is not installed. From the main menu, select Tools then select Plugins. Install the missing plugin. For now, the project will use the simulator.

Also got an error during the install process. My guess is the installation tries to write to a folder that is now protected by El Captitan SIP, and that some USB drivers are now no longer installed.

j2423 thank you for the console output.  I think UncleTom is right about the new El Capitan SIP protection.  I will look into it and get it corrected for the upcoming release.

Bryan H., are you referring to the MPLABX 3.11 release ? What timescale are we looking at?

In the meantime is there a workaround we can try?

It's quite important to get back to coding.  ;-)

Thanks.

ps the funny thing is I read this http://www.microchip.com/forums/m882413.aspx

BEFORE upgrading to El Capitano and figured it would all be OK !

The next one will be v3.15.
In quick searches I have found articles that explain how to disable SIP such as this one:

Once disabled you should not get the install error that you posted.

As of right now that is your best bet.

Thanks.

I decided to take the hit and did the following:

1) Ran the MPLAB X uninstaller and trashed the MPLABCOMM folder;

2) Rebooted holding command-R;

3) Opened terminal (now in recovery mode) and ran the command "csrutil disable" (there was a confirmation message);

4) Rebooted into my user account and ran the MPLABX installer. It ran clean with no fails. Spotted the following in the Console:

02/10/2015 18:38:31.000 kernel[0]: Sandbox: ln(737) System Policy: allow(0) file-write-create /usr/lib/java/libSerialAccessLink.dylib

02/10/2015 18:38:32.000 kernel[0]: Sandbox: osx-intel(685) System Policy: allow(0) file-write-create /usr/lib/libSEGGERAccessLink.dylib

5) Launched MPLABX and it found the Pickit 3;

6) Successfully ran in Debug mode connected to a Pick18F;

7) Rebooted with command-R and executed "csrutil enable" in Terminal, receiving a confirmation message;

8) Rebooted into user account and confirmed Pickit found and successfully debugging!

Many thanks for your help and good luck with the 3.15 release which we are all looking forward to!

;-)

Success, as per j2423's instructions.

Hoping I won't have to do it again!

I didn't want to go through all the single user / disable SIP stuff, so I've fixed the mplab_ide launcher script instead.

It's mostly a matter of modifying DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH and setting java.library.path so mplab can find the jni libs again.

My modified version is here: gist.github.com/zeha/2fbf01dfd4ca7d2b3812
(replace /Applications/microchip/mplabx/v3.10/mplab_ide.app/Contents/MacOS/mplab_ide with this.)

Relevant changes are in lines 36 and 151.

Good luck!

Hey CH

Thanks for the post, I can confirm this edit works on MPLABX v3.05.  Pickit is now back up and running.

Sweeeeet!

I've tried the instructions from j2423 above but I still don't see either the Ethernet Starter Kit 2 or my PicKit 3.

My system didn't have /usr/lib/java so I created that directory before installing. However I didn't see any messages in the Console about libSerialAccessLink.dylib only one about libSEGGERAccessLink.dylib .

I've also tried MPLAB X 3.05 but that hasn't worked either.

Any suggestions? I'm starting to get desperate.
