IDE shows false errors, still compiles

I restored all of the files in the source directory from a working backup directory. Now the MPLABX IDE editor window shows many new red error tick marks, "Unable to resolve identifier..." But XC08 it compiles successfully as it should because this is working code. But now the error checking is erroneous. What went wrong?

This is a bug in MPLABX and it does this sometimes. Try to doe a clean and rebuild of the project.

I have had success with this problem by changing the selection for the compiler. In my case I switch between XC16 V1.20 and then back to V1.21. This has cleared it up in the past.

I am using MPLAB 5.20 and still have this problem.
I beleive the problem is from Mplab parsing. The temporary solution is:
    • Right click on project, go to Properties, press Apply and OK.
MPLAB with parse your project again.

You think someone who didn't discover 5 years ago that this was a known issue before posting would still be looking for a (nonexistent) solution now?

Why is this issue so hard to fix? Or are they trying?

This idea of error highlighting is horrible. What's the use of compiling half-written code and displaying errors. It is great annoyance even if errors were shown correctly. But they are always incorrect.

Fortunately, you do not have to live with this.

Click Tools->Options, then go to the "Hints", select C/C++ and uncheck everything. Then go to "Highlights" and do the same. Then go to "Spellchecker" and uncheck "C/C++". Lo and Behold. All the annoying highlighting is gone and MPLAB X doesn't look like Christmas Tree anymore.

Interesting. I do like it catching syntax errors though. Is that an option?
    Thanks

    Why not both?

I'm not an IDE developer so I have no idea how difficult it is to make NetBeans behave the way one wants to. It is quite possible that it's really difficult.

But when I was a Microchip employee I was on numerous occasions told that something which did not cause a build to incorrectly fail but was merely "cosmetic" would have to go to the end of my work queue. So it is also quite possible that nobody has been permitted to look into this issue because, at the end of the day, it's just some red squiggly lines on a screen and has no effect on the code output by the compiler.
