I received this email with a little more info from Microchip :
Hi Joe,
Microchip is releasing MPLAB XC C compilers in the upcoming weeks. There will be three, one for each of the major Microchip logic architectures: MPLAB XC8, MPLAB XC16 and MPLAB XC32. By the end of March, we should have all three versions available.
In the same open-platform spirit as MPLAB X IDE, MPLAB XC C Compilers will run on Windows, MAC and Linux. XC compilers will come with a new license manager to make installation and license management simple across platforms. Users will be able to install the compiler on any platform of choice.
For ease of migration, installation and integration with MPLAB X in MAC and Linux platforms, existing users are recommended to take advantage of MPLAB XC compiler release. More information about MPLAB XC Compilers will be available on
www.microchip.com .
In the meantime, if you are interested in using HI-TECH PICC, C30 or C32 compilers on Mac or Linux you can:
1) Download a free copy of the compiler from
http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/mplab/X_Beta/index.html (fully functional and free to use on any application, just not completely optimized)
2) Or email
swlicensing@microchip.com with a request. Note that MPLAB C18 compiler is Windows only and will be deprecated by the introduction of MPLAB XC8.
If you have any additional questions you can contact me or our Marketing manager, Thang Nguyen.
Thx and rgds,
