Compiler Mac Licensing

Hello,

I have full versions of C18 and C30 compilers that I have been using on a PC. Will the licenses be transferable to a Mac? Are full versions available for the Mac?

    Joe,

Microchip will soon be announcing the MPLAB XC family of compilers. They will work on the same platforms as the MPLAB X IDE.
You will be getting notification of your upgrade path via email and on microchipDIRECT.

Watch the web site for the announcement.

    Thanks,
    jfd

I received this email with a little more info from Microchip :

    Hi Joe,

Microchip is releasing MPLAB XC C compilers in the upcoming weeks.  There will be three, one for each of the major Microchip logic architectures: MPLAB XC8, MPLAB XC16 and MPLAB XC32.  By the end of March, we should have all three versions available.

In the same open-platform spirit as MPLAB X IDE, MPLAB XC C Compilers will run on Windows, MAC and Linux.  XC compilers will come with a new license manager to make installation and license management simple across platforms.  Users will be able to install the compiler on any platform of choice.

For ease of migration, installation and integration with MPLAB X in MAC and Linux platforms, existing users are recommended to take advantage of MPLAB XC compiler release.  More information about MPLAB XC Compilers will be available on www.microchip.com  .

In the meantime, if you are interested in using HI-TECH PICC, C30 or C32 compilers on Mac or Linux you can:

    1)      Download a free copy of the compiler fromhttp://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/mplab/X_Beta/index.html (fully functional and free to use on any application, just not completely optimized)
    2)      Or email swlicensing@microchip.com with a request.  Note that MPLAB C18 compiler is Windows only and will be deprecated by the introduction of MPLAB XC8.

If you have any additional questions you can contact me or our Marketing manager, Thang Nguyen.

    Thx and rgds,

Have the microchip plans of replacing C18 by PICC-18 disappeared? Or for now isn't the best time to kill C18?

Editing this (originally written on January 2012). Now it is August..
"xc8 will take source written for C18.." the transition to get this will take a while. It's by no means done as of now (aug 2012)

"Note that MPLAB C18 compiler is Windows only and will be deprecated by the introduction of MPLAB XC8." Only C18->XC8 was mentioned, but the same will be for C30->XC16 and C32->XC32, right?

"same will be for C30->XC16 and C32->XC32, right?". Correct.

I feel like I'm somewhat in limbo until everything is caught up, which I don't have any clear dates for.

So I can upgrade from C18 to XC8, but your TCP/IP stack doesn't work with XC8.

I have a downloaded version of C18 installed for mplab X (3.37), but the current download for 3.43 is windows only(it's a .exe), so it doesn't appear I can keep it current.

Am I missing something?  Or should I just ignore MPLAB X and the XC8 compiler for another year(or more) until it's all sorted?
