PICKit windows 7 64 bit driver issue

Hi,
I followed the install instructions on the starter kit disc but when I plugged the PICKit2 USB device in, Windows 7 insists on installing an HID driver for it. I tried reinstalling from the 64 bit drivers directory as instructed but the system comes back with "Windows has determned that the best driver is already installed" As a result I cannot see the Microchip custom USB device in my list of hardware and even after forcing the reinstall or uninstall and re-detect I cannot change which driver gets used by the device.

I have Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit with service pack 1

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

Bob Powell.

I am having the same problems with the PICkit 3 and Windows 7 64 bit. It appears that Microchip intends to use the HID driver at least with the PICkit 3. In device manager you only see the HID device. If you open the Windows 7 "Devices and Printers" window you will see the PICkit 3 listed as an active device there. I suspect the PICkit 2 may work the same. My PICkit 3 works fine on an older machine running Windows XP. It also seems to work on the Windows 7 64 bit machine with the "PICkit 3 Programmer" standalon application from Microchip's website. In MPLab v8.76 on the Windows 7 machine all I get is "No PICkit 3 Connected". I have an open ticket with Microchip but no resolution yet. If you find a solution please post it.

Bob Powell: PICKit 2 and PICkit 3 are USB HID device and Windows will install the HID driver for them. You do not need to use other drivers.

Those custom drivers are not for PICKit 2 and PICKit 3, but rather ICD 2, ICD 3, Real ICE or other Microchip tools.

I also have an issue with PICKit3 on a 64-bit Windows 7 system. MPLAB 8.76 does not find either of my two PICKit3 programmers. My PICKit2 works fine on that system. It is a Dell Inspirion i3 running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. All three of my PICKits work fine on my darling wife's 32-bit XP system.

I am beginning to think it is not a driver issue, per se', because both PICKit2 and 3 pull in the same standard HID driver - and the PICKit2 works just fine. I suspect that this particular Windows 7 64-bit environment is either exposing a bug in the MPLAB code that is specific to PICKit3, or is doing something legitimate but silly on the USB that confuses the PICKit3 firmware (but does not confuse the PICKit2 firmware).

My open ticket number is 214864.
