Copying text from C18 User Guide?

I have Acrobat Reader 10.0.     I can't copy any text from the C18 User Guide.   Seems a number of Mircochips PDFs have this problem.  I am guessing the PDF was never created as text in the first place?

I have reported this as an issue for the PIC32 Family Reference Manuals PDF's. I think you'll find under File->Properties from acrobats menu that "content copying" has "inadvertently" been "Not Allowed"

Hmm. Acrobat Reader 8.2.5 can copy text from http://ww1.microchip.com/..._User_Guide_51288j.pdf
so I dont think that's it.  I suspect that the document's DRM is broken - either by Microchip or Adobe.
Version 8 is the last decent version of Acrobat Reader, after that Adobe jumped the shark.

If you cant roll back to version 8 and apply all the ESSENTIAL third party security patches like ripping ECMAscript out by the roots, try Sumatra PDF Reader.  Its very light weight and if you use the portable version will NOT clash with Acrobat Reader.  Its a *little* primitive and it can be fussy about giving you an I beam text selection cursor till its EXACTLY over the text (no separate 'Select Text' mode') and once you have 'painted' it you must hit Ctrl-C as there is no copy menu item but it will copy from the C18 manual - I've just checked it copies the C code of example 5.1 from the file above.

I have not been using Microchips products for very long but I thought there was never a problem before.  I think the issue started with 9 because I had version 9 on another pc and had the same problem.   I will give Sumatra a try, thanks.

    It is not a "problem"

It is an *ANNOYING TREND* I have noticed over the last year or so, that nearly *everyone's* data sheets/manuals I have had the displeasure to have to dealy with has.  Makes keeping electronic notes a ROYAL PITA.

When I use Sumatra on the C18 user guide it says "Copying text is denied".

Why microchip would release documentation where you can't copy examples is beyond me.

I link you posted you can copy the text.    I was using this link

    http://ww1.microchip.com/...n/devicedoc/51288f.pdf

It is the first one that comes up in a Google search.

Well as J superceeds F you are in luck! LoL That one gives 'Copying as Text is denied' in Sumatra so I guess AlfBaz is correct. It looks like if we cant copy an example we should raise a ticket.   The OTHER thing that totally pisses me off is even the ones you can copy from you cant use the Adobe reader commenting tools on to add our own notes - whats with that?  Do Microchip have shares in a papermill?

This is part of the reply I got from tech support pertaining to the content copying gripe

    2. As for the write protect, I will see if the document writer can amend the protection settings.

What I'm suspecting will happen now is he'll contact the document department and talk to some pleb who will refer him to the latest document release policies...

Likewise with Okular on Linux, no issues copying from C18.

It depends on the document.  I'm using XC16 documents that I redownloaded in April.  The 16 bit Tools Library Reference has protections set to Content Copying:  Allowed

For the XC16 Compiler Users Guide, protections are set to Content Copying:  Not Allowed.

No, it depends on the tool you use to read it.  I can cut-and-paste from the latest X16 User's Guide.

    It depends on both.
If no protection is set, any reader can copy it.
If "copy" protection is set, then only a tool that ignores that protection can copy the text.

    Agreed.

Microchip, for goodness sake, just set the document security on the pdf to:  "Content Copying: Allowed" !!!!!  ... and "Page Extraction: Allowed" !!!!!
