I have a question because I am working on similar project.
Basically I am writing a Linux USB kernel driver that interfaces with PIC18f. All I am trying to do is toggle LEDS on pic18f board from linux application - > linuxkernel driver . My question is.. does the current bootloader the chip has installed by Microchip support to intercept "led on or off" command and function response for the commmand.  My guess is there is NOT. I need to handle the USB message by modifying the firmware (bootloader).  Can you verify? Also can  USB driver on Linux side be a HID driver or any generic USB driver with 'interrupt' endpoint. I said interrupt because with lsusb -v, linux detects the device with IN and OUT "interrupt" endpoints. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I've just created a google code project to host a Linux/Mac Qt port of the PIC32UBL pic32 bootloader application which is part of AN1388.
Blurb:
This is a port of the Windows MFC PIC32UBL bootloader application which is part of Microchip application note AN1388 (PIC32 Bootloader) to Linux and Mac using Qt, LibSerial, libusb and hidapi. Open the pic32ubl-qt.pro project file from QtCreator and build away. I've only tested the USB functionality on 64-bit Linux. If you want to use the UART or Ethernet programming you might get lucky. Same goes for OSX and 32 bit Linux. Good luck!
 
OK,   I can't post URLs yet since I'm a new member, so you'll have to search for pic32ubl-qt on the google code website.
