My advice would be is to use the PICkit in non-MPLAB lab mode.  To do this... load the old Windows GUI, using Tools/Install Operating System to enable pic18f4550 and just program it.

Do you have the old PK2 Windows software? I can send you a link.

I do not know url you used, but, you may need a later database.

Just install Great Cow BASIC, it has the software in the PICKIt2GUI folder (and the operating system is in the same folder).  Then, copy the  PICKIt2GUI folder to somewhere you like and then you could uninstall Great Cow BASIC.

Good to know PK2 is also being used. Microchip has moved 2 generations from PK2!

The PIC18F2550 was supported by PK2 and PK3. So, @Gorro was able to use the old PK2 software.

For newer chips you can still use a PK2 and PK3 with our PICKitPlus software.  See www.pickitplus.co.uk

This is a step forward.  As this is source of the error.

Talk me thru the connections you have, post a photo of your setup and do have any other chips you can test?

OK.  I have just connected a clone PK2 to a 18F4550 using the old Windows PICkit2 software.  Software is very old... circa 2009 (still works) with a parts database of 1.63.155 and the PK2 OS2 is 2.32.00 (the stock version)

Connections are:  MCLR, VDD, GND, PGD and PGC from pin1 to 5 - these is no reason why this does not work.  My chip is in circuit but I do not have any serious components on the programming lines (an ADC on B7 or B6 may mess things up for you..)

If your chip is in circuit - pull it out to test.

    Good.

Remove the caps, remove the clock, leds etc.  Just have the five connections between chip and programmer.

Question.  Has this clone programmer worked with other chips?

Test 'Read' the chip using the GUI application.  Note results.
Replace chip with the pic16f877a. Test 'Read' the chip using the GUI application.. Note results.

    Hi,
do you have a pull up resistor on MCLR ?
If not please put a 10K or 47Kohm pull up to Vdd
    Regards

For support make sure to check first here : http://microchipdeveloper.com
There are hundreds of PIC, AVR, SAM...which one do YOU use ?
