When I start with a new PIC I just read the datasheets.
Some are heavy going but I tend to just read about the peripherals I am using.

Microchip also says its very important to read errata sheets too.

Lucio di jasio has written some fantastic books
"Programming 16-Bit PIC Microcontrollers in C: Learning to Fly the PIC 24"
A bit outdated in the devtools but if you already have experience with PIC you won't have any problems

I also used that book when doing my first PIC24 project. last I heard the website for errata and to download the project files was still available. Worth visiting the website if you do go with this book, to get the errata and extra files that other people have done.

"Beginner's Guide to Programming the PIC24/dsPIC33" by Thomas Kibalo is good, especially if you've never done this before but it's spotty when using the PIC24FV (5V) processors because the syntax is different but this can be overcame by looking at the datasheets.
