Standalone use of the RN2903A

Hi all,
 
I am new to LoRa and the RN2903A, so please excuse me if this is a stupid question.
 
I would like to control a couple of the GPIO on the RN2903A via LoRa, but cannot find any documentation on this. Seems the only way is to use a host micro. For simplicity it would be really great to use just the module not have to use a separate modem.
 
Can the RN2903A be run as a single device and if so how do you program/configure it?
