I suspect it has been a general Internet connectivity problem.
I've received notificatons from our web host of a global outage at Centurylink/Level3 earlier today.

Was down again for me an hour ago. This time was obviously an error on the web server itself.

After redirecting to microchipdirect.com for an hour or so, it seems to be working again right now.

It's been going on and off for a couple of days, then it didn't work for all of yesterday
I was genuinelly afraid of what i would have seen after it got back up (thinking that it could have been another migration to an even lesser platform)

FWIW, this still seems to be a problem (at least for me), logging in to the forum from chrome on a computer that's not logged in before. On machines that have cached credentials it's OK. Other browsers like Edge seem OK to.

We have identified the root cause of the issue to be related to a recent change that Google rolled out for the Chrome browser and the way it handles cookies. Basically, the cookie that the forum site creates does not conform to the new patch, and causes the failure of the Captcha (it's basically identified as a cross-site scenario). Other browsers (Firefox, Edge, Safari) work for the time-being, but it will only be a matter of time before the other browser vendors implement the same, as well.

There is a workaround in Chrome that consists of the following:
-open up chrome://flags in the Chrome browser
-search for " Cookies without SameSite must be secure", and select Disable
-log into the forum site, choosing "Keep me Logged In"
        -go back to chrome://flags
-set "Cookies without SameSite..." to Default

As long as you don't clear out your cookies or log out after visiting the forums site, you should be able to return to the forums without having to log back in again.

We have reported this to the forum software vendor, and they will be working on a fix.

I never use Chrome which is identified as malware by Malwarebyte.

I use, according to preference, Firefox, Edge and Opera.  Opera even provides a free secure proxy connection.

I too have never used Chrome and saw the same issue (logins lost).

So an improved theory of the failure seems necessary.
