MPLAB X 5.40 is the first 64-bit version (or not)

MPLAB X 5.40 refused to install on 32-bit Linux.

So, I used 64-bit Debian installation. Guess what? MPLAB X refused to install because it said it needs 32-bit libraries. After I installed the 32-bit libraries, MPLAB X 5.40 installed Ok.

Looks like it is not fully 64-bit yet.

I think so.. In Windows it still installs in Program Files (x86), while all the latest compilers install in program files because they are 64bit
My guess is that X is not "true 64 bit" because it's still based on an older netbeans, but there is no point in moving to apache netbeans before they finish porting the C/C++ module (and hopefully when that'll happen we'll start seeing some of the ages old netbeans bugs to be solved)

Remember that this is the Microchip IDE tools group.

I bet there is a whole new bait store full of bugs just waiting to draw your attention.

Actually, most of the bugs i've witnessed in MPLABX have been related to netbeans... which was basically abandoned until apache picked it up. I'm hopeful that the new guys working on the new thing will try and fix things (also hopeful they won't add a shitton of new bugs)

Yup, that's the impression I've gotten from talking with the devs. I'm pretty sure they're acutely aware of what we think about MPLAB X, but are waiting for NetBeans to catch up before they can do anything. I believe NetBeans 12 does support the Language Server Protocol so in theory Microchip could ship clangd with MPLAB X, which would probably be okay for the 32-bit devices but I haven't actually used it.
