A hardware error has been detected by the built-in self test

I  have an ICD4 (JIT172820558) that somtimes responded with
"A hardware error has been detected by the built-in self test
Ramps internal SW_VDD from 2.0 - 5.0V"
Rebooting + reconnecting sometimes helped,
but I couldnt find any logic behind that.
Now from today, the message always appears.
Tried all hints with lower speed and rebooting,
no change.

Any hints out there ?
Feels like that thing is somewhat broken...

    Never experienced such issues.

You don't write whether you're using the external power supply, but I'd start with checking that the USB voltage provided is ok (around 5.1 V). Might be not "the thing" but your USB port(s) broke.

PEBKAC / EBKAC / POBCAK / PICNIC (eventually see en.wikipedia.org)

    Hi,
you should post a ticket to Microchip website. It seems to me there is an hardware issue inside your ICD4...
    Regards
