PICKit3 act like PICKit2?

If I were to buy a cheap PICKit3 from eBay, could I load the latest PICKit2 firmware and expect it to behave just like a PICKit2?

No you cannot do that.  The PICKit2 firmware is specific to the PICKit2 programmer, and, the PICKit3 firmware is specific to the PICKit3 programmer.

Buy a PICKit2 programmer.  :-)

Well, I do have a PICKit2.  I have created a new firmware hex file, but I don't want to brick my PK2 if something goes wrong.  I also have a PICKit3, and I see that there seem to be cheap PK3 clones on eBay that are cheaper than the PK2 clones.  Some of the prices for authentic PK2's on eBay are insane.

You have created a new hex file firmware file for the PK2?  I would recommend staying with the stock hex.

If you have a PICkit3 then you can recovery the PICKit2 by direct programming.

PK2 and PK3 prices are all over the place.  We produce a low cost PICKit2 Programmer board and when we time we will release to the public.

By connecting the PK3 to the pins of the PIC inside the PK2?  Not sure I have anything that can do that to surface mount packages.

and, there is a connector on the PICKit3 PCB to assist reprogramming and therefore recovering the programmer.

For future reference...

PCB inside the PICKit2 has only a label for J1.  Looking at the PCB, with Microchip logo and J1 label upright, J1 pins are 6-5-4-3-2-1, from left to right.

6 - NC
5 - PGC, pin 27
4 - PGD, pin 28
3 - GND
2 - +5V USB
1 - MCLR/Vpp, pin 1 (square solder pad)

I didn't brick it.  Yay!  And I got the PICKit2 to recognize the 16F15313.
