PicKit 4 Connected when not Powered Causes Problem

Hi:
I`ve been using the PicKit 4 for a while now.  I use the recommended wiring when connecting the PicKit 4 to pic16LF18xxx MPUs.  This generally works fine.  However, I occasionally (mistakenly) connect the PicKit 4 to a circuit where the MPU is powered BUT the PicKit 4 is not yet plugged into a USB port.  This causes excessive power draw from my circuit usually destroying the MPU and the low-power +3.3v regulator.  Is there simple protection I can add to my circuits to protect against this mistake without affecting the ICSP communication requirements?

Thanks-
Tom

The PICKit 4 is designed to be able to get power from the target when in Programmer To Go mode.  You should alwasy connect the PICKit 4 to the USB before connecting to your target board.

OK... Thanks for making that clear.
I just never saw it spelled out anywhere to be sure to connect the PicKit 4 to the USB first.
    Thanks-
