Crashing trying to run different MPLAB instances with --usedir

I've followed the user guide directions to run multiple instances of MPLAB X (version 5.30) under Windows 10. Startup box is successful to 'Done Loading Modules' at which point the box goes away and nothing is left running in task manager. Still runs fine with the original shortcut (no --usedir). I've tried putting the new directory next to the original in User/AppData and also tried in various other places, results are the same any time shortcut uses -usedir. I don't need to run more than one instance at a time, just want separate installs for Harmony 2 and 3 and am tired of manipulating the plugins to accomplish that. Any ideas appreciated!

Some more info. I tried this in MPLAB 3.35 as well with the same results. There are other threads describing this being done easily and successfully. Has anyone had success with multiple instances on Windows 10? perhaps that is the problem. I'm more of a Mac guy but have checked Windows security and firewall settings that I know of.

    Hej.
I'm running three instances of 5.30 on Win10. No problem.
Installed only 8bit support, so no Harmony.

I was using -usedir "folder". It is supposed to be --userdir "folder"
