PICKit 3 works fine with PICKIT 3 v3.10 but not with MPLAB

I have one PC and one laptop, both Window 10, 64 bits.
I installed MPLAB IPE v5.25 on both and the older software Pickit 3 v3.10 on the laptop.
Programming my PIC16F1847 is correctly done with the Pickit 3 v3.10 software. However, on the same laptop MPLAB X IPE does see the PICKIT 3 at all?????
On the PC, the MPLAB IPE sees the PicKit 3 tool, but power target circuit from PM3 does not power the microchip. And loading the hex file into the microchip resulted in the message the target must be powered externally. But neither power from the Pickit 3 tool, neither from external power help to down load the hex file. It fails.
In all cases I used MPLAB as administrator.

What can I do?

Kind regards

    Hi Jan,

On the laptop I think you need to use the driver switcher tool in order for the latest version of IPE to identify PK3. This is located under C:\Program Files (x86)\Microchip\MPLABX\v5.25\Switcher\64Bit

Regarding the issue of powering the target from the tool, what I usually follow is I go to the Power Settings tab first, select the checkbox (Power target from tool), come back to Operate tab and then 'Connect' to the tool. This way the tool will attempt to provide the supply and if it fails you'll obviously see an error. Most of the times I see 'Target Device ID mismatch error' kind of message. In my case I sometimes get my connections wrong or I put my board's jumper on the wrong supply pin. So I'm interested to see what is the error message that you are seeing. Can you post a snapshot of it?

You don't need the driver switcher with the PK3. It won't do anything.

If you're going back and forth between the old Pickit3 software and MPLABX you should make sure that the PK3 gets its firmware reprogrammed whenever you switch apps.

However, on the same laptop MPLAB X IPE does see the PICKIT 3 at all?????

This means that the tool is not showning up in the dropdown of IPE at all. The reason is that the MPLAB USB comm has been set to work with older software and MPLAB X IPE doesn't read the tool. When the driver is switched back to work with MPLABX, then the firmware upgrade will automatically happen if required.

    Hi vkalyan and Jerry

I'm happy that you help me to solve the problem.
    1) I tried the both switchers (ICD3_switcher64.bat and RI_switcher64.bat as administrator), without success.
    2) I tried the PICKIT 3 with software version 3.10, which works well, see picture.
    3) I tried MAPLAB IDE V5.25 without success. I set the power off and on the chip in the software, but in practise the 5V is in both cases available on the microchip. But, as you see in the picture, this software does not see the PICKIT 3. I cannot select any tool.

    Kind regards

PS. I intended to add the pictures, but I don't know how?

I seem to remember a option to switch PK3 between MPLAB  and stand alone mode .. may be dreaming :)

Jan... I am sure i saw it somewhere ... but cannot find it, I was using the PK3 standalone on a win 7 machine, a year ago but now switched to linux.mint so difficult to load / track / find .. not given up yet ! You could try forcing a reload of PK3  FW  with  MPLAB 8.xx ..
This my be what I remember ( see last post ! )
