Using Xplained SAMD21 board with MPLAB

I recently inherited a project that must be developed on the ATSAMD21J18A. While I have used PICs for a long time I am new to Atmel. I purchased a SAMD21 "Xplained" board for testing as it is pretty "vanilla" and breaks most of the pins out. I tried using the Atmel Studio for this and after spending a fair amount of time with it I learned that it does not have code generation features for clocks, pins, ADCs etc as does the MPLAB MCC. I can work without this but for expediency I would prefer this feature.
One of the responders on the Atmel board indicated that I should be able to use the board with the MPLAB IDE. I am looking for some fundamental startup documentation on this--I just need to "select" the board and understand how it interfaces (normally I use a PICkit3). Does anyone have any information here to get me started
Thanks
Fritz
