PIC24F Graphics on MPLABX v5.xx

Hi All,

I find my self a bit frustrated looking everywhere for information but only finding pieces or mixed info. To start, I want to make an application with a graphics display and a touch screen. I decided to use the PIC24FJ256DA210 with internal GPU. First obstacle was to find that most of the development boards that the documentation is based on are simply not available any more. I can't understand the reason Microchip still leaves this documentation available on their site if they instruct to use development boards which are not available. Anyway, I managed to get the PIC24FJ256DA210 development board (DM240312) and a compatible graphics display (copy of the Graphics Display Truly 3.2 240x320 Board AC164127-4 which again, is not available any more).

Now I was looking at the development tools and wanted to use the MLA library together with the GDD X for graphics generation. The issue is that apparently, the latest version of MPLAB X (actually, from version 3.00 onwards) does not support the GDD X plug in and if I want to use it, I need to install MPLAB X v2.35 or lower.

My question now is simple, what are the latest tools available if I want to generate a graphics application on the PIC24FJ256DA210? Is there a similar plugin as the graphics composer on Harmony or am I stuck with using MPLAB X v2.35?

Thanks

My guess would be that due to low popularity/use of the part and the software support was dropped :(
have you tried contacting a local microchip FAE on the phone?

    Hi JPortici,

Thanks for your reply. It actually looks so. Still makes no sense leaving applications notes for graphic development which at the end points no none existent hardware. I expected better than that from microship.

    To OP.

I think should go for PIC32MZ"EF" and PIC32MZ"DA"
Parts with Microchip Harmony for better Graphic Performance , Less Development time .

The EF will not have better graphics performance. It has no GPU.
The DA will have a lot better performance than the PIC24.

Hey, I was exactly in the position your are in, a month ago. The lack of proper documentation and outdated libraries made this a daunting task. But with a lot of time invested I have been able to use the PIC24FJ256DA210 board with Newhaven 320x240 display evaluation kit (available on digikey). For the most part, follow the instructions on Digikey to port from the native display to NH display.
Since I was also new to 24F series, I had to learn from scratch. I have uploaded a few example projects I made here
I eventually figured out how to display Images, animations and move between screens. Try those example projects and if you really need more help on graphics aspect, let me know, I can update the Github with an example graphics project.

     Continued from last post:

I used MLA and understood how to use it from here.  I tried using VGDD but its not compatible with the latest MLA which is what I used. So I just modified the code little by little and understood each function in the project appDemo. Also the digikey tutorial was made using old version MLA. But only difference is there is no Hardwareprofile.h anymore. All the changes are done in Systemconfig.h where you will find the exact same files. Later we can use the package functionality to use the demo project as a template and start a new project while commenting out unnecessary capabilities (in my case external programming and touchscreen).
