Will there be a real ice 2?

I've been using this device for over 10 years, I cannot believe how still Microchip can sell this very problematic, very expensive and clumsy device? Instead of debugging the project, I'm trying to solve the real ice problems, pray it not to fall into an error or halt or lost connection or give errors like:

An Error occurred while running
Failed while sending cmd_SET_PERIPHERAL_FREEZE command
Invalid command response (sent 0x71, received 0x3f)
Failed getting PC
FAILED_SETTING_SWBP
Invalid command response (sent 0x3f, received 0x89)

It's tough to create the scenario and catch the bug in the program most of the time, just when the real ice is needed it fails and gives some stupid error! What a shame!

Are you really convinced that it's the "clumsy tool" and not the clumsy user?
I do not experience problems - even with the latest PICs...

PEBKAC / EBKAC / POBCAK / PICNIC (eventually see en.wikipedia.org)

Hmm, I've never seen that set of errors before on my ICE.
Wonder if maybe it's a PC->ICE connection issue?
OP, check you're using a decent USB cable and if not doing so already, connect directly to the PC as hubs can sometimes cause issues communicating with the tool.

If connection issues are ruled out and you still run into problems it would probably be worth opening a ticket with Microchip.

I have used nearly all series of pics except the latest pic32mz and mk. All versions of mplabs since v6 or olders but real ice with V8. I have used may be a dozen computers including desktops and laptops. I've used several windows OSes. I have used a lot of different usb cables and tried usb hubs. I also purchased performance pack. I've tried several real ices. It was always problematic. If the problem is me, what am I doing wrong and I still could not solve for over 10 years?

Microchip's site now says the Real Ice is not recommended for new designs.

Since the Real Ice is the only debugger that supports instruction trace on PIC32, what does Microchip intend as its replacement for this function? As far as I know, the ICD 4 doesn't do instruction trace...

It says more than not recommended for new designs, It says I will stop adding new chips to it.

    Failed while sending cmd_SET_PERIPHERAL_FREEZE command

I see that one fairly regularly, but only with the PIC24E family.
