Just got the "End of Life" warning from DigiKey for the ICD3...

I've been holding out on the ICD4, since the ICD3 has been pretty much bombproof for us here. Why fix what isn't broken? But with EOL coming on the ICD3 I guess it's time to start worrying about the ICD4.

What's the tribal lore on the ICD4? Is it workable? Reliable? Can MPLAB X v3.40 work with it, or does the ICD4 force you to upgrade your version of MPLAB X too?

The ICD4 Works Fine for My PIC32MZ.  I had it for about a Year  I do not think it will work at all on V3.40.
You will have to get one and try it.

ICD4? Reliable workhorse.
Not sure about V3.40, but with my current V4.10 and my customers' V4.15 there were absolutely no issues.

Yeah, I know we're a holdout on v3.40. But again, why fix what isn't broken. Every time you change your development environment you get the delightful fun of sorting out a whole new list of bugs, unintended features, etc. We understand v3.40 and it works well so we've been very hesitant to "update" it without a compelling reason.

Maybe the ICD4 will be that reason. On the other hand, maybe we'll just buy a couple more ICD3's as backups to keep us working for several more years. There's never a good time to randomize your development environment... it's not like we have a lot of spare time around here, there's always a time crunch.

Nice find!
I wonder if I can convince my bosses to spring for a couple at that price...I've already got an ICD3 and Real ICE for development, but the production folks are mostly using PICKit 3 or a CCS ICD-U64.  ICD3 would certainly be an upgrade from those.

Make that 2138! Great tip, thank you! I've just ordered a backup unit. DEFINITELY worth $100 if it keeps us working down the road.

I'm notifying Production, too, since they use ICD3's to flash parts on the line. $100 is CHEAP to keep those lines flowing smoothly.

Thanks again!
