I had to actually screencap my post and embed it because the firewall was blocking it otherwise even if I removed the links, so yeah thanks for that, mysterious firewall of mystery.

I confirm your findings.
In my case it is device specific though...
edit: at least for option 2 and 3, I never know if I have the latest cached locally..

I just tried browse for local datasheet.
It not only remembers the dir, it prefills the file name and still one must select the file name
Maybe there is some reason I can not think of for this behavior..Attachments are not available: Download requirements not met

Yeah, that's what's so strange, it remembers the directory but doesn't actually do anything with that information.
You would think it would assign that directory to that device somewhere and just pull it up from then on out.

In an ideal world it could just download the latest datasheet and errata for you and keep it updated automatically.

In my screen shot it remembered the file name !!
I do not think any more java background operations would be welcome.

I would hope it would be something where it would only download a datasheet when the user manually chooses, and would only keep it updated if the user selects an option to do so.  But now I'm just wishlisting...
I was mistaken in my word choice, mine also remembers the entire filename, not just the directory.
I submitted a ticket to microchip just to make sure they're aware.  Not like it's a huge problem but it would be nice to have a quick (working) link there to open the part datasheet.  According to their support page though they're shorthanded the next couple weeks though so I don't expect to hear anything in the near future.

Got a response on the ticket I submitted.  They are able to reproduce and they've made a case.  MPLABX-3924
