PICkit-4 Device Driver not installed

Windows-7 64-bit, MPLAB X IDE v5.05
Received PICkit-4 about a month ago.  It probably would have worked fine originally (pretty lights, etc.) but I pushed that darn reset button shortly thereafter and now there are no lights at all.  It isn't recognized by the PC anymore so none of the Emergency Boot Firmware Recovery tools work.  When plugged into a USB slot the response is Device Driver Software Not Successfully Installed. It then shows up in Device Manager as an Unknown Device, made by ATMEL Corp., and has Hardware IDs of  USB\VID_03EB&PID_6124&REV_0110  and   USB\VID_03EB&PID_6124.
Does anyone know what driver is installed by MPLAB X, so that I could find it and do a manual driver update?  Then possibly MPLAB X would see it and I could do the Emergency Recovery thing.  I will promise never to touch that button again.

All the drivers should have been installed with the MPLAB X install.  Once connected (even though is says Atmel device) you should still be able to run the Emergency Firmware Recovery.  That program knows how to talk to the PICkit 4 in the state you got it into.  I suggest that you connect the tool to USB and then press that button again but hold it for maybe 20seconds.  Then try the recovery again.  that button erases the micro in the PICkit 4 but it takes some time, so the part may only be partially erased.

Tried that just now.  MPLAB X says Could not find any tool in recovery boot mode.  PC still says Device driver software not successfully installed.  (I think I might try putting an oscilloscope on the USB data lines to see if MPLAB X is talking down that same port.)

Poison finger. Why the hell did they design that button so temptatious?
After 4 weeks, why not just return it and get a working one?

The company I work for bought it for me.  I think it was working originally, because of the lights and all that, even though I never got around to programming anything with it.  But then I pushed that button and now here I am.  I don't feel I should return it if I broke it somehow.  Just doesn't seem right.

I know what you mean but a button is a control.
As a member of a production company for electronic devices i can assure you, you can't break a product by pressing a button that's meant to be pressed. And if you can break it that way it's definately not your fault.

Well, I connected the oscilloscope onto the data lines of the USB port.  When the PICkit-4 is first plugged into the USB port I see the data transfer happening, and the computers' response saying it couldn't install a driver for it.  When I run the MPLAB X IDE firmware recovery tool there is never any data down that USB port, so it doesn't see the PICkit-4 sitting there.  I wonder if wants to find it in one particular port?  I wish I knew of a driver I could install that would make it something visible to MPLAB...

I think you have a big misconception about how USB ports work.
Connecting a scope to those lines is not telling you anything useful.
It does seem a driver is lacking, so I would suggest reinstalling MPLABX from scratch, and make sure you allow it to install everything it wants.

Newer windows versions require admin privileges when installing drivers, so please make sure when you install MPLAB X you do it as an admin.
