Hi,
Did you try to use the 8 bits bootloader generator library fo MCC ?
It should also show the right piece of code to erase / write the flash memory.

I also tried to use the read_flash() and write_flash() functions given above but they are for 16 bit address although
26k42 is 128 flash page size which is also true for pic18f57k42 but this is 24bit address.

It won't take you more than one minute to modify them. They are pretty self explanatory. There is no excuse for being lazy.

I doubt it is a matter of being lazy but a simple lack of basic understanding of how the hardware and software work.

Yep, but i looked back at the various answers and by just saying they don't work because i didn't make a trivial change i say lazy.
asking instead how to modify them because i don't know how at least show some motivation

Which version of XC8 compiler are you using?
I am able to build MCC generated files with XC8 v2.0 and MPLAB X IDE 5.10 (MCC v3.66)
