New Datasheets Not clear as before!!!

Hi Everyone

This is more of an opinion and maybe when one gets older change becomes more difficult :)
I see that the PIC16 datasheets have taken on more the format of the AVR datasheets... its not bad bad man i'm treasuring the old pic16 datasheets.

I like the AVR, its powerful and far more flexible than the PIC16 but I've never been big on the ATMEL format on the datasheets and always found the Microchip datasheets far easier to grasp. The diagrams and data layout was easier to digest where as the ATMEL datasheets seemed more of a novel, more reading to get to a point or understand it.

This became more apparent now as PIC16 datasheet has moved onto atmel format and I miss the old format, ESPECIALLY the memory map showing all the registers. It gave a beautiful overview of the memory which required no guess work where the registers are and where they are. Yes I know they give the addresses for the registers and there is a register summary at the end (its nice) but its not the same as seeing the entire map on 1 page (or more for larger chips).
Same goes for the over viewed circuit diagrams... they just not the same.

Keep the ATMEL editor with the ATMEL documentation and bring back the Microchip Editor... :)

How do you guys feel about the new format?

I like my information condensed into a compact format. I don't like code that sprawls all up and down the page, and I don't like the new large print format datasheets that take several pages to contain the information that one page used to.

Maybe they think this format is easier to read on a mobile device :)

    Nearly there...

    @mbrowning
Agreed... that is the other part, the large format spanning over a few pages.
At least I don't feel alone on this LoL: LoL

You can be sure you are not alone.
One more for the "hio density technical format for engineers", against the new "hobbyst format".

So what is microchip gonna do about it.... in the end nothing, i've not known them to care. They just after the next buck.
It would be great if they would leave link to the older datasheets for noW.
Anyone have a Older datasheet on PIC18LF47K40? grin: grin

    Hi

I don't think there is something like old and new datasheets.
Last week I downloaded a datasheet for an older PIC and it was in the usual compact format.
It looks like only the newer editions, for recent PICs, suffer this the "hobbyst" sindrom.

    Best regards

I was about to agree, assuming they would not bother reformatting a datasheet for an existing device, then I discovered that the PIC18F47K40 was indeed in the old format up to rev C at least, and the current rev E is in the new format.

I definitely prefer the "old" compact datasheet format! I wonder whose bright idea the new format was... marketing? ;-)

Probably another brainchild of Microchip's Richard Head, who is featured in the following:

That would be expected, the datasheet got updated and the new edition shows the new format.

No more register definition legends, but 25% more pages. Dual column efficiency is axed. So, less info and more wasted space. Reminds me of a court case transcript w/ double spaced lines. Just about as efficient as the government. So bad.

Note to self. Download and archive desired datasheets now cause everything is getting worse and worse.

Speaking of hobbyists, how do you do the Knight Rider thing? It's for my class*

    * by class I mean the C++ keyword -- I already have the lights going back and forth perfectly but now I'm trying to make the car drive by itself, enter and exit trucks moving at highway speeds, and tell bad jokes. Oh yeah, and for this project I am using a PIC10F202 and, uh, I can't understand the datasheet. :-p

    Seriously....
I'm sorry to say this ...but... for [link=mailto:F@#$]F@#$[/link] Sakes MICROCHIP... what the F are you smoking!!!
For anyone interested, Take the PIC16F1947 Datasheet and compare to the PIC16F18456 Datasheet. I trying to port code from the PIC16F1947 to the PIC16F18456 and do you think the new datasheet is as clear as the the older one... NOOOOOOoooooooo....
Who ever the Picasso is that decided to do this PLEASE go get your bonus from Microchip's brown hole...
You just twisted my arm to jump this ship...

    Thanx

I (technically) *am* a hobbyist*, and I also find the new format less than helpfull, especially when compared with the old. Probably due to my sci/eng background. Microchip used to be amongst the best in class. Now, not so much.

The datasheet format is definitely getting worse. And mirrors used to be much better ...
