... i've tried 3 different versions of Java (using the config file to point to the jDK home)

What I forgot to mention is, that on Windows, the IPE comes with its own JRE (Java runtime). So changing the Java version on your PC (and probably Mac) will not help. Or rather, it should not help, assuming that Microchip distributes a working JRE. Of course, if you let the config file point at a different Java version, something might change.

I think your fix with the resolution change is very useful. My other PC (the one without extra firewall) has a lower resolution than my laptop (which has a 4k screen). I hope someone from Microchip will be able to use this in the next version of the IPE.

Hello;
I have the same issuewith the IPE 5.05 on Win10, using a laptop with high-resolution display (2560x1440). Re-installing didn't work. How do I change device xml width/height if that fixes the problem? Changing screen resolution alone (or making the window smaller) didn't resolve the issue.
I still have the IPE 4.00 installed, which still works, but I cannot programme recent devices such as the 18F27K42 which I need to programme ...
is this a bug in IPE?
thanks for help and instructions on how to resolve this problem which many people seem to have

It seems like DPI issue, if you keep it 150% then it should work fine.

i've not tested on windows, but windows 10 seems to default the DPI over 100 so setting 'scaling' to 100 probably fixes it but you may need to logout before opening IPE.

A data point (but no solution),

On my corporate Win10 'Enterprise' version PC - MPLAB-X 5.05, Harmony and XC32 installed and ran without a hitch first time. I did not have a previous version installed.

Some AV software is very nasty on removing needed bits of programs.

You can try to whitelist the required directories.

Hello all;

thanks for the hint and I can confirm now that this is a Win10 Display-Settings -> Scaling problem. Autoscaling and any manual scaling over 125% doesn't work on my 2560x1440 laptop display. In autoscaling mode, it didn't work on my external 1920x1200 screen either.

In times where people have high resolution displays and frequently plug in/out lower resolution external screens (actually we should be grateful to Windows to have implemented that new feature allowing such switching without manual display settings), it would be good if Microchip could also make IPE 5.05 conform (no problem with IDE 5.05). Because on high resolution displays you can't read much if you are in 100% scaling mode. Interestingly, no problem with the former 4.0 versions, which I'm continuing to use for IPE until they fix that problem.
Anyway, I don't really want to call this a bug since I know also other (and 50x more expensive) software who also have struggled with that feature with their first new versions on Win10. Microsoft keeps you busy ...

In general I like the IDE 5.05 + XC8-2.00 combination, and all hobbyists in particular should appreciate that XC-2.00 even in the free version seems to produce code at same optimization level (example: 103 kB) as the paid standard-setting in XC8-1.4x (101 kB for same example). I.e. Microchip finally dropped the code de-optimization "feature".
(though I also must say that I didn't get all my code compiled with XC8-2.00 running as compiled with XC8-1.42, but I have some very complex code so a compiler change is always problematic).

Currently updated Windows 8.1, 4k display 200% scaling. The same "empty window" problem with IPE 5.05.
Microchip should invest some funds to updrade monitors at least for QA team.Who knows if QA departments exist in Microchip at all?

I get the distinct impression you are not pleased with Microchip.

I get the distinct impression that you want to talk ;)
Actually I depend on Microchip because we are already in relations. Obviously there are a lot of advantages of Microchip itself and its products. That was the reason of relations. Without satisfying factors there could not be unsatisfied customers - they simply were not customers.
So we are not moaning. Being in relations we want to be heard (not ignored). Otherwise the world is wide. Existence of established relations is the factor that can be exploited but not infinitely.

Similar issue on Mac installation: IPE window initially appears 'empty' & Java.Lang.NullPointerException error.  For a MacPro with native resolution 2880x1800, I have to set display scaling on the laptop screen to '1440x990' equivalent, in order to see the contents of IPE.
