Thank you for the question, JorgeF.

I've never used a debugger, so I don't think I need that feature.  Therefore, aside from that PicKit4 merit, is there any other merit beyond "faster programming speed on the PicKit4"?  If not, it would seem prudent for me to be satisfied with my two PM3s.

Hi
JDW
Thank you for the question, JorgeF.

Never used a debugger?
So your case its just the oposite of mine.
I think that "faster programming speed " when talking about the PK4, is refered to its predecessor, the PK3.
Same with ICD4 vs ICD3, and so on. At least is what makes sense, comparing the new generation with the previous one of the same tool.

EDIT ADD:
Of course a cross comparision can be made, and its done, but between tools for the same job, like comparing PK3 with ICD3, but the PM3 its a tool of a different nature, like the RealICE, so its not a case of direct replacement.
That is why I said I didn't understand the fuss around this subject.
Like someone mentioned before, NKurzman I think, apples can't be compared with oranges.

Not a debugger, no.  I only use ICSP which the PM3 supports.

Thank you for your replies. You gave me the answers I was looking for.  I see I do not need a PicKit4.

Best wishes!

If programming speed is your only criteria then you do not need a pickit4. Possibly an ICD4 or a real ice. But they are not standalone Units.

If you read through all prior posts you will see that "programming speed" is NOT my "only criteria."  But after reading the answers, it seems that and debugger are all that the PicKit4 have to offer me over my PM3's, so I of course am not interest in the PicKit4 as a result.

My entire purpose in posting here was to see what differentiates the PicKit4 from the PM3 seeing that I already own two PM3's and am satisfied with what they do for me.  I was just curious why anyone who already has a PM3 might find the PicKit4 a worthy purchase.  But again, that would appear to be programming speed and the debugger alone.

Thanks.

I designed a simple programmer which has very simple GUI and very simple command line software. It is also faster than PICkit4 and has better part support. Although it is LVP only.

Here are software screenshots: http://www.northernsoftware.com/nsdsp/soft/prog/

The PICkit 4 has two more pins, are you counting from the correct side?
How is it powered?
What program are you using with the PICkit 3? Yes IPE would be slower to start.

You did select your CPU and pressed the “Connect” button first?

HI
this is the worst debugger microchip ever made....can not connect to computer always
The configuration is set for the target board to supply its own power but no voltage has been detected on VDD. Please ensure you have your target powered up and try again.
Connection Failed.
even self test not working...
latest update download but nothing
why not microchip made simple software for work with microchip programming only like pickit3 and 2 has small stand alone software...

If it does not pass the self test, is it broken?
The several I bought all worked. but, I did not try to power my circuit from the PICkit4.
