Try Clearing Both Cache Folders and see if it is better.

How much memory do you have?  I would recommend at least 8 Gigs.

Also, virus scanners can bring MPLAB X to it's knees as it continuously opens files that the virus scanner feels obligated to scan on each open.  You should be able to tell your virus scanner to ignore file opens for files within the MPLAB X installation directory.  (But it can still scan these directories during it's nightly scans.)

thank you for your replies.
NKurzmann: where can i find these cache folders?

GeorgePauley: I have installed 8 GB RAM, Core-i7-2600 3.4GHz, System on SSD, WIN7-Pro64.
VirusScaner Avast is deaktivated, but IDE ist still Slow-Starting?

Hallo,

thank you for your replies.
NKurzmann: where can i find these cache folders?

MPLAB's Help/About screen tells you where they are.

This forum is mis-configured so it only works correctly if you access it via https protocol.
The Microchip website links to it using http protocol. Will they ever catch on?

1. If your PC or Notebook harder is SSD, it will be fast.
2. If your DRAM is 8GB on 64bit Windows, it will be more better than 4GB RAM.

Hi

Just made a fresh install of MPLab X 4.05 + XC32 + XC16 + XC8 + MCC on an old PC that never had Microchip software installed previously.

It takes less than one minute to start, and less than 2 minutes to build the "tcpip_wifi_demo_app" from "mla v2017_03_06".

Processor: Intel core 2 quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
RAM: 4GB/DDR 800
HDD: 1GB
OS: Windows 7 pro 64 bits
Virus scanner: Microsoft Security Essentials - no excluded files or folders.
Network: Active with celular internet access (3G)

How many plug-ins, toolchains or other add-ons do you have installed?
Do you have more than one virus scanner active?

NOTE: I installed everything under "c:\microchip" not under "c:\program files (x86)\microchip".

Best regards
Jorge

Ok but why are the plug-ins installed?

I am not using the xplained boards.
Are they doing anything?  (They are active)

I do not have any xplained boards to try
it does not seem to be affecting my 4.05 startup
maybe this is an indication of what is to come in future MpLab X versions.

Yes, I also assumed that it must have to do with these boards.
[edit: and yes, I think that's Atmel]
Which I don't have or used.
Still I do not have any special problems with the startup speed of 4.05 and all previous versions.

My 4.05 also has the five (not three) following plugins installed and shown as "active".
xplained_communication
xplained_database
xplained_information
xplained_ui
xplained_usb
Also there is a menu item under Window which says at the top "Xplained"
I could imagine that xplained_communication was Manni's culprit.
The only interesting thing would be to know whether disabling these plugins would noticibly speed up (e.g. one or two seconds) for all of us. But measuring would be rather difficult due to various Windows load optimizations.
May be Manni could tell us, which one is the bad one.

May as well remove xplained plugs, if you click on xplained under windows it will tell you that xplained boards are not found.

The evil spell checker can be removed, why would I want to spell check C code or even comments?
I always disable that in options.
Of cause it will show red underlines because C code is not English spelling or any other language.

A lot of these plug-ins can be removed.

Why have we got css plugins, If I wanted to use css, I'd be using a Microsoft product.

Hello,

i have checked it singulary:
The bad one is "xplained_ui", Version 0.0.3.
Without it, the IDE starts in a few seconds, with it needs 5-6 minutes.

I removed css (cascading style sheets and html)

My colors were reset but when using windows side by side or clone it doesn't work properly anyhow.

I don't have time to mess around in there but a lot of the plugins are not needed.

Just checked again, whether deactivating all 5 xplain* modules results in faster start of MpLabX

My total load time is no more than 15 seconds (if I start MpLabX several times in sequence, i.e. many stuff in the cache.)

Deactivating the xplain* modules does reduce the starting time. The splash screen shows at the bottom what it currently does, and especially "Starting modules" is reduced from approx. 3 to 4 seconds to less than 1 second.
For me this is not such a large gain, because I usually do not start MpLabX more than 3 times a day.

But,-  as a side-effect MpLabX did modify my projects configurations.xml on the next start.  I can see that, because it will differ from the Git Repository version then. Actually it even causes my compilation to fail, because some include path is not correctly used. I have multiple configurations in my project, looked a bit, as if it confuses them.

The consquence is,- better don't touch the settings, unless the performance really hurts you like e.g. Manni.
Or at least make a backup of your project configuration before experimenting.

Best to disable, test, if ok then remove.

I'm about to do a clean format and a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit.

I went to the Microsoft website to download it since I didn't have my dvd drive connected.
My key code was rejected.

I called Microsoft and they directed me to One-Drive to get it.

They said that they just needed to access my computer.  (Scam on the side by a MS employee?)
I said no way, only I can use my computer.
