Microchip Forum Guidelines

By proceeding to post you agree to follow these guidelines.

OUR MAIN GUIDELINE: We require all posts to be polite, constructive, and on topic. If you do this, the rest of the guidelines won't need more than a cursory review.

Section I - The Golden Rules:

1. Be respectful of all users at all times.  Treat people respectfully.  There are many "newbie’s" and students coming to these forums.  While some think they can get others to do their work for them, most just need hints to get pointed in the right direction.  We don't recommend that this site be a "crib sheet" for lazy students, and if someone is asking you to do their homework, they can be politely refused.
   
2. Respect the forum staff. If you have an issue with our moderation, please open a request in the forum resolution center. We reserve the right to edit for content.
   
3. Adult content/violence/illegal activity, profanity: Not acceptable. Violators will be banned.
   
4. Forum etiquette:
   
   • Keep posts professional and to the point. Flaming, rudeness, inappropriate language/subjects or non-Microchip related topics may result in you being removed from the forums.  This includes degrading, berating or demeaning comments. We encourage people from all over the world to use our forums.  Rude comments on someone else’s English abilities or misuse is degrading and inappropriate in these forums and may result in the poster being banned.
     
   • Flaming and condescending messages: Flames are messages that personally attack, call people names, or otherwise harass another forum member (or any person). These, along with condescending posts will be removed at the moderator's discretion. If the thread is deemed "flame-bait" (appears to be intended to start an argument or is likely to cause an argument rather than enhance the discussion), it will be locked or removed without notice.
     
   • If a thread turns into an argument, it can be locked or removed without notice. Sometimes a moderator may split the thread or delete certain portions in order to keep the discussion going, but if a thread degenerates and diverges from our guidelines it may be truncated or removed. 
   
   
5. SPAM and unsolicited advertising is not allowed. Active users in good standing are allowed to have links to personal sites in their signatures, in their profile, and may post them in threads on occasion, as long as the content of those links does not include materials Microchip deems inappropriate.
   
6. Strive to communicate with other users as simply and effectively as possible:
   
   • When writing a post, please space paragraphs with a blank line in between them for better readability.
     
   • Do not write posts in all uppercase letters, as it looks as if you are screaming at the people reading your post.
     
   • Do not shorten your words to acronyms or abbreviations. It is very difficult to read and understand.
     
   • Use color and font properties for highlighting portions of your text, and not for all of the text in your post.
     
   • Typos and other errors can cause miscommunication between users on the forums. Preview your text before posting. 
   
   
7. If you have found a post that you feel is inappropriate or that violates the forum code of conduct, please contact a Microchip Forums Administrator. Do not attempt to moderate discussions or correct other users yourself.
   
8. Be selective in your use of images: they may help to explain something more clearly or indicate a problem you are experiencing better but you have to remember that not everyone has the same bandwidth. If an image is the best way of handling the information, please keep your image to less than 100kb. If you would like to post other images, please see our gallery.
   
9. Private Messaging users for support is strongly discouraged. It is also unlikely that users will respond to these requests.
   
10. Users should only have one active account. If you feel you have justification for requiring a new account, please contact an administrator to discuss your situation. Users who have multiple accounts without approval of an administrator may be subjected to infractions or bans without notice.

Section II - Technical Support Policies:
 
When asking for technical support:

1. There are no stupid questions. Everyone was a new user once.
   
2. Try to give information in the title of your post, instead of using a title like "it's broken," use a title that is specific, such as, "Unable to stop chip from resetting." A clear title will attract more views to your thread, as it gives a clear indication of the content of the post to the people that are willing to help you. This will get more attention and better responses.
   
3. Searching the Microchip Forums is a quick way to see if someone has had your issue and if it has been answered. In a forum as large and active as this one, there's a good chance your question has been answered before, and you can get the information you want quickly.
   
4. When requesting help, please include as many details as you can. Include as much information as you know. If you do not know how to find out the information that a user is requesting of you, you might want to ask them how to find the information they have requested. Attach screen shots or other files if you think it might be useful.
   
5. It's always nice to let the people that help you know that you appreciate their assistance. It's extra nice if you then share that information to another user that has the same question you just had. If your question is resolved (which we hope is always the case!), it would be helpful for others if you label which procedure worked for you by quoting or clearly referring to it. Giving feedback rewards the person helping and the posting of a successful resolution of a problem will help others understand the root cause.

When answering technical support issues:

1. Be considerate to the person asking the question. Once again, everyone was a new user once.
   
2. Try to avoid acronyms and jargon when giving instructions. New users may not be able to follow you, and many will not ask you for an explanation in order to avoid looking ignorant. "STFU" and "Go look on Google" are two inappropriate responses to a question. If you don't know the answer or don't wish to help, please say nothing instead of being rude. Politely showing someone how you searched or obtained the answer to a question is encouraged.
   
3. If the user's question has been covered in one of the community documents, please give them a description and the links. Some useful sites to point new users are: http://www.microchip.com/wiki/ , http://www.microchip.com.
   
4. Use code tags when posting source code. Place your source code within code tags as shown here: [/code]your code here[/code] (first bracket is of course closed). The web forum will then show your code with proper formatting.
   
5. There is often more than one solution to a problem, choose the one you think will be the easiest for the user. If you're uncertain if a procedure is correct, it's helpful to mention that. If your procedure has inherent risks, tell users what they are. Try to think as a new user and choose the simplest solution.
   
6. Explain each step of the solution. If possible, try to teach the user while providing a solution. Teaching begets more teaching.

I agree with the content of your post and if you are from Microchip you should fill in your profile so the members here will take what you have said seriously.

As a welcome question, what are the real benefits of UNI/O™ Serial EEPROM? I have my doubts here. I will post this to a new thread.

The UNI/O™ Serial EEPROM will be targeting the 10F2xx or the Mature range of uP's without
EEPROM on silicon die & other uP vendors, in saving an extra I/O pin.
 
It's just too lovely.
 
I can really stick my neck for Microchip Silicon Fab Team, I guess their way ahead.
 
Dallas 1wire EEPROMs in TO92 case are still not as compact as the UNI/O, Well done
Microchip!
 
How I wish Microchip could have implemented an EEPROM on one of these 10F2xx.
 
To recall user settings for field adaptability is too apparent.
 
Then, may I ask if we are been cowed by the opening post to this forum?
Free thoughts could cost money. We aren't allowed to fly again
 
How can Microchip make FRAM affordable?[8D]
 
Trying to level out EEPROM wear on smaller size uPs steals code space that I could have easily implemented
an eye catching feature my client will most approve.

Olin is back. And based on his latest post's, Microchip had him read, and agree to, the rules.
I hope this is true, Olin has a lot of knowledge worth sharing.
The board can be a better place with his controbutions.
