We are planning a product with the following topology
USB-C Port (USB3 Device) -> LAN7801 <- RGMII -> an arm soc with rgmii interface.
We could customize the arm soc driver for such a phyless configuration but we don't hope the phyless mode of LAN7801 will trouble the user to install a special Linux driver on his or her Linux PC.
My question is, in the phyless mode, will the current Linux driver work out of box (for popular distro such as Ubuntu), or a modification is required, or, such a phyless connection won't work for LAN7801 due to certain software or hardware reason? If so, what the possible reasons could be?
