Low-cost Embedded Wireless Connectivity for Commercial and Smart Home Networks

MiWi™ Protocol

Developed to enable low-cost, commercial and smart home networks, MiWi is used in applications such HVAC systems and Alarm sensors where reliable sub-GHz connections and long battery life are needed.  MiWi also runs in the 2.4GHz worldwide ISM band.   The MiWi protocol runs on the IEEE 802.15.4 RF Physical Layer.

The MiWi stack offers a significantly smaller foot-print relative to the open standard based ZigBee® compliant protocol stack.  This enables operation in microcontrollers with smaller memory / lower cost.

A typical sensor connected in a MiWi Star network can be implemented in an 8bit PIC MCU with only 8KB of code memory.
 

Microchip’s MiWi™ Development Environment (MiWi DE) helps customers develop wireless applications using MiWi and reduce the time to market.

MiWi DE Stack for 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit PIC® Microcontrollers is part of the Microchip Applications Libraries (MLA).

  • MiWi™ P2P/Star – Simple Peer-to-Peer or Star network requiring minimal code size.
  • MiWi Mesh – A True Routed Mesh network topology.  “Out of the box” the Mesh Firmware is optimized for our most common application of 24 nodes and up to 10 hops.  This is perfect for a department store HVAC or alarm application or a large smart home application.   The MiWi Mesh network is capable of up to 8000 nodes and 64 hops.

  • The ZENA™ Wireless Adapter is a multi-function Universal Serial Bus (USB) wireless adapter connecting USB-equipped desktop or notebook computers with Microchip wireless products for development or application uses.
  • As a development tool, the ZENA Wireless Adapter can be used as a protocol analyzer or as diagnostic tool. It can also be used to connect the computer as a wireless node to the network for application use.
  • The ZENA Wireless Adapter is capable of performing a variety of functions and each function can be programmed into the adapter using the USB boot loader.
  • The ZENA Wireless Adapter is a flexible, multi-purpose device. Firmware applications can be updated from a computer application program like the Wireless Development Studio.
  • The ZENA Wireless Adapter is pre-programmed with a MiWi Wireless Protocol Sniffer application. This allows the user to display MiWi Wireless Protocol packets in a graphical format in the Wireless Development Studio.

Wireless Development Studio

The Wireless Development Studio (WDS) is a Java-based graphical user interface(GUI) which allows quick and easy development of wireless applications based on the MiWi protocols. It features a MiWi protocol Sniffer for monitoring, debugging and gathering information and a configurator with a GUI that enables the simple customization and configuration of wireless networks.

WDS provides two powerful tools - Protocol Sniffer and Configurator. Find below specific features for each tool.
