Functional Safety Standards

There are several recognized industry –specific standards developed for functional safety for use in certification.  A certified product can then be claimed to be Functionally Safe to a particular Safety Integrity Level or a Performance Level in a specific range of applications.

IEC 61508: Core F/S standard, applied widely to all types of safety critical E/E/PS

IEC 62304: Medical Device Software

UL 1998: Standard for Software in Programmable Components

UL/IEC 60730: Automatic Electrical Control for Household Use

IEC 60335: Safety of Household  Appliances

ISO 26262: Road Vehicles Functional Safety – based on IEC 61508

IEC 61511-1: Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector – based on IEC 61508

IEC 62061: Safety of machinery - based on EN 61508

ISO 13849: Safety of machinery

EN 50128 / 50129: Railway Industry Specific

ISO 25119: Tractors and Machinery for Agriculture and Forestry

US RTCA DO-178B: North American Avionics Software

US RTCA DO-254: North American Avionics Hardware
