Functional Safety

Functional Safety is the part of the overall safety of a system or piece of equipment that depends on the system or equipment operating correctly in response to its inputs, including the safe management of likely operator errors, hardware and software failures and environmental changes.  The objective of functional safety is to eliminate or reduce the risk of physical injury to a user due to a malfunction of a system or piece of equipment. Functional safety emcompasses the operation of the entire system and deals with the function of every component within the system and evaluates the impact of malfunction of each component on the entire system.

The steps to achieving functional safety are as follows:

  • Identification of potential hazards
  • Determination of required safety functions
  • Assessment of required functional safety standards
  • System design to meet required Safety Integrity Level (SIL) or performance level
  • Certification of system to applicable functional safety standard
  • Functional safety audits to ensure compliance to standards
