Introduction

The AVR414 application note serves as an user's guide for the ATAVRRZ502 Accessory Kit. An evaluation application is furnished with this kit. This application defines a thin layer on top of the IEEE 802.15.4 library available from Atmel that makes it possible to send data between two peers. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard defines a radio transceiver and protocol stack for wireless personal area networks (WPANs) with relative low data rate (250 kbps).

Both hardware and software building blocks are needed to realize the evaluation application of AVR414. These blocks are briefly presented in the following list. The picture below can also be used as a cross-reference.

Building Blocks:

• Radio Platform: The radio platform is based on the AVR ATmega1281 microcontroller and the AT86RF230 2.4 GHz radio transceiver. The ATAVRRZ502 and STK541 are radio platforms from Atmel that AVR 414 supports.
• IEEE 802.15.4: IEEE 802.15.4 is the software stack that provides simple network capabilities. This software stack is running on the AVR using the AT86RF230 as an air interface.
• AVR 414 Firmware: This is thin layer between the IEEE 802.15.4 stack and PC/serial port. The firmware defines a simple textual protocol that makes it possible to:
  1. Establish peer-to-peer link.
  2. Get indication when a device/peer associates (connects) to another device/peer.
  3. Send data.
  4. Get indication when new data is received.
  5. Terminate the peer-to-peer link.

• Chat Client: The chat client hides the details in the textual protocol of the AVR414. The end-user sees a GUI (Graphical User Interface) written in the Java programming language, where it is possible to configure a chat session between two peers and send messages back and forth.
