The board supports development for the PIC18F87K22 or PIC16LF1947 MCUs, which highlight the capabilities of each product family. The board can be powered by five different power sources including batteries or energy harvesting modules (sold separately), and it supports a variety of common components that can be selective enabled. The board is also expandable through the on-board PICtail connector that permits the addition of capabilities such as RF connectivity.

It includes an on-board debugger/programming capability as well as USB communication, a capacitive touch pad, potentiometer, acceleration sensor, MicroSD™ memory card, and an OLED display. The board can function as a USB mouse, joystick or mass storage device (thumb drive) all using the on-board capacitive touch sense pads.

The PICDEM PIC18 Explorer (DM183032) low-cost demo board is the main board you need to evaluate Microchips PIC18 MCU families. The PIC18 Explorer features a PIC18F8722 microcontroller, which is the superset of our traditional PIC18 general purpose 5V family. Also, the board comes with the PIC18F87J11 processor PIM which is the superset of our PIC18 J-series of 3V MCUs for cost sensitive applications. The single development board supports dozens of the general purpose PIC18 families using various processor Plug-In Modules (PIMs).
The PIC18F87K22 Processor Plug-In Module (MA180028) includes a 80-pin PIC18F87K22 that can be plugged into the PIC18 Explorer Board for evaluation of this XLP MCU family.
